Ramilies Road, W4

Situated on Ramillies Road in Chiswick, this semi-detached property underwent an extensive transformation to become a generous five-bedroom family home. The project focused on maximising every available inch of space through a clever combination of a double-storey side extension, a full-width rear extension, and a complete loft conversion. By thoughtfully lowering the ground floor levels, we were able to create a sense of volume and height that defines this modern residence, resulting in an expansive and light-filled home that makes the most of its Chiswick setting.

The Brief

The vision for this project was to push the boundaries of a standard semi-detached layout to create a "forever home" that felt expansive but remained within a realistic budget. Our clients needed a space plan that could accommodate a busy family of five, with a focus on open-plan living and high-quality storage. The challenge lay in the complex planning process required to secure approvals for such a substantial increase in footprint. The brief called for a seamless connection to the garden, a dedicated master suite, and a layout that made practical use of every available area.

The heart of the home is a vast, open-plan kitchen and dining area that flows effortlessly into the garden. To achieve a truly unobstructed view, we installed minimally framed, floor-to-ceiling French doors that slide entirely into a hidden wall cavity. When open, the boundary between the kitchen and the terrace completely disappears. To add interest to the layout, the informal living area is set on a slightly raised platform; this creates a sense of seclusion and cosiness while remaining part of the wider social hub. The floor also features a hidden pantry and a formal reception room.

Connecting the Kitchen to the Outdoors

GROUND FLOOR RECONFIGURATION

Throughout the house, we introduced bespoke design features that add warmth and personality. A standout element is the oak louvres on the staircase, which act as a delicate screen between the hallway and the stairs. These allow natural light to filter through while providing a beautiful architectural detail.

UPPER FLOORS AND LOFT CONVERSION

Elevated Sanctuaries for Rest and Play

The upper levels were completely redeveloped to house five spacious bedrooms. On the second floor, the new loft conversion serves as an elegant, airy master suite. To make the most of the views and fresh air, we installed a unique bi-folding window dormer that can be opened fully on summer days. With a neutral colour palette and a private walk-in wardrobe, the suite offers a serene retreat from the vibrant energy of the family rooms below. The first floor was also extended and reconfigured to ensure the children’s bedrooms are bright, generous, and full of storage.

The Result

In total, the transformation of Ramillies Road shows how clever architectural and interior spatial design can significantly increase a property's value and livability. By leading the project from the initial concepts through planning permissions, build, and final interior fit-out, we delivered a home that the owners absolutely love. It is a space that feels comfortable, looks beautiful, and makes practical use of every available square metre, proving that ambitious design is achievable on a realistic budget.
