Sutton Court, W4

Located in the heart of Chiswick, this Sutton Court Road property had seen better days and was in need of a complete redevelopment. The pre-existing second-floor extension had been built to a poor standard and needed to be completely rebuilt. Our task was to design and build a spacious, welcoming family home that prioritised light and usable space. Although the building's footprint only increased slightly, the interior was completely reimagined to create an open, airy residence that feels significantly larger and more cohesive than before.

Our Role:

  • Concept Design

  • Planning Applications / Permissions

  • Architectural Design and Design Detailing

  • Interior Spatial Design

  • Tendering

The Brief

The vision for this project was to transform a neglected building into a modern social hub for the family. The clients wanted to fix the structural issues of the past while creating a home that was both practical and full of personality. Key requirements included a large open-plan kitchen for entertaining, a dedicated master suite that felt secluded from the rest of the house, and clever integrated storage to house an extensive collection of books and art. The project required a full 36-week build programme to ensure every inch of the house was restored to a high standard.

The ground floor was transformed by a wrap-around extension that now serves as the home's central social space. To bring as much light as possible into the core of the plan, we installed a full-length rooflight that spans the entire length of the room, paired with sleek Crittall-style external doors. The living area features a bespoke concrete fireplace and a bespoke floor-to-ceiling bookcase, designed specifically to display the owners' collectables. This is balanced by a minimal kitchen featuring a four-metre-long island, creating a space that feels both social and highly organized.

GROUND FLOOR WRAP-AROUND EXTENSION

The first floor was renovated to allow for a generous kids bedroom and guest bedroom. On the second floor we completely rebuilt the loft and developed the existing loft storage space, to create a generous sized master suite. By adding two rear-facing Velux skylights, we were able to increase the volume and flood the room with natural light. To create a true sense of seclusion, the en-suite features a unique wrap-around floor plan with Crittall doors. Practicality was built into the design through a walk-in wardrobe with frameless doors and hidden hinges, allowing the space to open fully and reveal a floor-length mirror visible from the bathroom.

The Result

The revival of this Chiswick property is a testament to how a house in disrepair can be completely reimagined with the right structural and design approach. By rebuilding the poor-quality additions of the past and managing every stage from the first sketch to the final build, we were able to turn a neglected building into a highly considered family home.
