Project Type: Extension & Refurbishment of West London Family Home

Location: Chiswick, London

Scope of Work:

  • Ground Floor Rear Extension

  • Loft Conversion

  • Bespoke Kitchen

  • Internal Reconfiguration

Elmwood Road, W4

Located on Elmwood Road in Chiswick, this semi-detached family home required a thoughtful redesign to better suit the needs of a family of seven. Although the property had undergone previous work, the layout remained inefficient for modern family life. Our task was to maximize the home’s potential through a full ground-floor and second-floor refurbishment, creating a more usable, light-filled environment and finding the space for an essential additional bedroom.

Our Role:

  • Concept Design

  • Planning Applications / Permissions

  • Architectural Design and Design Detailing

  • Interior Spatial Design

  • Bespoke Joinery

The Brief

The vision for this project was to move away from a "piecemeal" layout and create a cohesive home that could comfortably accommodate a large household. The clients needed a central social hub and better bedroom distribution. The challenge was to work within the existing structure while extending both outwards and upwards to create high-quality living spaces. Key requirements included replacing an underused conservatory with a solid extension and expanding the loft to house a generous primary suite.

We began the transformation by removing the existing conservatory and replacing it with a single-storey rear extension. To ensure the new addition sat in harmony with the rest of the street, we used London Stock brick to perfectly match the original building. The resulting family kitchen is a bright, sociable space, featuring skylights above the dining area and a high-level feature slot window that draws in natural light throughout the day. Three sets of bi-folding doors were installed to capture views of the garden, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience for the family to enjoy year-round.

LOFT EXPANSION AND RECONFIGURATION

Optimising Space for a Large Family

To accommodate the need for more sleeping quarters, we gained permission through Permitted Development to extend the existing loft conversion. By adding a large rear-facing dormer and four new double-glazed sash windows, we were able to significantly increase the volume of the top floor. This allowed us to create a generous primary suite and an additional bedroom, providing the family with the extra space they required without compromising on the quality or light levels of the rooms.

The Result

The transformation of Elmwood Road proves that even when a house feels "finished," there is often untapped potential that can be unlocked through clever reconfiguration and high-quality design. By looking past the existing extensions and reimagining the home’s volume, we were able to turn a house that felt at capacity into a spacious, balanced residence for a family of seven.
